Adolescence represents an important developmental stage during which exposure to and use of substances can be both common and challenging. Equally as challenging is the task of navigating the complexity of caring for a young person who becomes involved in substance use. This training aims to provide knowledge and resources that will allow professionals working with young people to determine the best ways to support youth at various levels of substance use involvement. Participants will learn a basic understanding of the different types of substances and explore substance use trends as they relate to young people. Participants will also learn how a substance use problem develops, its impacts on a young person's life and an understanding of both risk and protective factors. The training will introduce participants to the transtheoretical (stages of change) model and identify the challenges youth may face in making changes to their substance use. Participants will learn how best to intervene using effective screening, assessment, and engagement tools. A review of services available in Manitoba including criteria for treatment and stabilization will also be provided.
Youth Addictions Centralized Intake (YACI) Service is a Provincial service that offers information and support regarding the Youth Drug Stabilization (Support for Parents) Act. It serves to provide information to youth, their families and allied professionals regarding addiction services for youth in Manitoba. The service is designed to assist Manitobans in navigating the continuum of youth addiction services and identifying an appropriate program.
Marymound Youth Addictions Stabilization Unit (YASU) is a short-term program to support youth who have an addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Stabilization services are provided by an interdisciplinary team of youth care and nursing staff. The goal is to support the young person to physically withdraw from the substance(s) they are using and to explore treatment options available in the community.
