Structured Decision Making

October 20, 2021

The Structured Decision Making® (SDM) model for child protection assists agencies and workers in meeting their goals to promote the ongoing safety and well-being of children. This evidence and research-based system identifies the key points in the life of a case and uses structured assessments to improve the consistency and validity of each decision.

  • Day 1 - The SDM Safety assessment (SA) helps workers at all points in a case determine if a child may safely remain in the home, with or without a safety plan in place.
  • Day 2 - The SDM Probability of Future Harm (PFH) assessment and reassessment (PFHR) are actuarial assessment tools which estimate the likelihood of future child welfare involvement, and assists workers in determining which cases should be continued for ongoing services and which may be closed at the end of an investigation.

All case managers are required to attend training in the SA, the PFH and the PFHR tools.

Need JUST the Safety Assessment training? For staff who have already received training in the PFH and the PFHR tools, but still require the Safety Assessment training, please indicate this on the training registration form by listing "SDM Day 1 - Safety Assessment" as the name of the training you are requesting (in other words, staff ARE able to attend day 1 only, if they have already received the PFH and PFHR training).
